From Conflict to Clarity: How De Beers Is Redefining the Diamond Trade

For decades, the term “blood diamond” haunted the global jewellery industry — a grim reminder of the human cost behind the sparkle. Among the companies that faced scrutiny was De Beers, a name once synonymous with the diamond trade itself. But in recent years, the company has embarked on one of the most ambitious transformation stories in modern mining — a shift from secrecy to sustainability.

A Murky History, An Open Future
The early 2000s witnessed the world awaken to the ugly side of diamond origins. In reaction, De Beers was an inaugural member of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), an international system created in 2003 to remove conflict diamonds from global markets.

Now, over 99% of the diamonds traded in the world are Kimberley Process certified conflict-free — a benchmark De Beers publicly endorses and assists in implementing.

Establishing Ethical Assurance Through Technology

De Beers' innovations extend beyond compliance. With its Tracr™ blockchain solution, De Beers now offers end-to-end digital provenance for natural diamonds — enabling each diamond to be traced from mine through to market.

This blockchain use, introduced in 2022, is one of the largest luxury supply chain transparency efforts to date, providing consumers with verifiable evidence of origin and authenticity.

Investing in People and the Planet

De Beers also makes significant investments in community and environmental initiatives throughout Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Efforts such as the Building Forever program target:

Empowering women-owned businesses in diamond-producing areas
Supporting education and healthcare
Restoring biodiversity and safeguarding threatened species in mining regions
Among the company's 2030 sustainability aspirations are becoming carbon neutral in operations and seeing that "every diamond leaves a positive legacy."

A Symbol of Change

No matter how immutable the diamond industry's history, actions taken by De Beers signal a greater shift: one in which accountability and transparency are as strong drivers of value as rarity and beauty.

In an age when consumers insist on knowing the tale behind each transaction, De Beers' initiative proves that a traditional business can conform — and pioneer — in an era of new-age ethical luxury.
